Child-Resistant Packaging, Explained

If you package anything that shouldn't end up in small hands — or sell to businesses that do — child-resistant packaging isn't optional. Here's how the main CR closure types work and which ones we stock.

The Main CR Mechanisms

• Squeeze pop tops — pinch the sides and the lid pops. One-handed for adults, frustrating for kids. Our 13 dram and 30DR pop tops use this.
• Reversible caps — one side push-and-turn resistant, flip it for a regular cap. Our 15D and 16D vial trays.
• Side pinch — square jars that open only with simultaneous side pressure. Our 15D side pinch trays.
• CR Smartcaps — the engineered screw closures on the Chubby Gorilla Spiral and Aviator lines, with tamper-evident bands and integrated liners.

CR vs Tamper-Evident — Not the Same Thing

Child-resistant = hard for a child to open. Tamper-evident = shows if it's been opened (tear bands, heat seals, shrink bands). Regulated products often need both — a CR closure with a tamper band, or a CR container inside a heat-sealed mylar bag.

What makes packaging child-resistant?

Child-resistant (CR) packaging requires a coordinated action to open — squeeze-and-flip, push-and-turn, or aligned pressure — that's difficult for children under five but manageable for adults. Certification testing follows the federal Poison Prevention Packaging Act protocol.

Which of your products are child-resistant?

Pop top vials (squeeze to open), reversible-cap vials used resistant-side-down, side-pinch jars, and the entire Chubby Gorilla Spiral and Aviator lines with certified CR Smartcaps.

Are mylar bags child-resistant?

Standard zip mylar bags are not CR. Heat-sealing adds a tamper-evident barrier, and CR-certified zipper bags exist as a specialty item — call us for availability.

Do I legally need child-resistant packaging?

It depends on your product and state — many regulated products require certified CR packaging by law. Ask your attorney what applies to what you sell; we can supply the compliant container either way.
